Salvatore J. Verga, Sr., age 86, a lifelong resident of Jersey City, NJ, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 19, 2017. Sal retired from Christ Hospital, Jersey City after 30 years of service and was a proud Army Korean War Veteran. He was a devoted member of the American Legion #427 and a member of St. Ann's Padre Pio society. Sal was widely known in Jersey City and pretty much everywhere he went, he was never too busy to stop and chat with everyone. He earned the nickname "Sausage King" of Jersey City from giving his homemade sausage to neighbors and friends. Sal loved the Green Bay Packers, trips to Florida, but mostly loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Beloved husband of 54 years to Connie (Trapano) Verga; loving father of Rosanne Lomolino, Salvatore J. Verga Jr., and Paul A. Verga; cherished grandfather of Alyssa R. Lomolino and Mikayla D. Verga; dear brother of Frank Verga and the late Vincent Verga. Sal also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2017 from 2 PM to 7 PM at the RIOTTO FUNERAL HOME, 3205 John F. Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, NJ 07306. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 23, 2017 at St. Nicholas Church at 10 AM. Family & friends will gather at the funeral home at 9 AM. Mausoleum entombment will follow at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, N. Arlington.
