Sophie Kalcanides

Sophie Kalcanides, 80, died on Tuesday, April 26th, 2016. Sophie immigrated from Greece to Jersey City in 1958, and resided in the downtown area ever since. Along with her husband, Sophie owned and managed John's Deli and Pizzeria in Jersey City, from 1970 to 1995. She was also an employee of the house keeping department at Smith Barney in New York City for 20 years.

Sophie will always be remembered as being a loving wife to her husband John Kalcanides Sr. who predeceased her in 1996. She will also be remembered as a loving mother to: Anna Baroutoglou and her husband Stefanos, Sophie Ciszewski and her fiancé Dr. Spartaco Bellomo, Despina Dubis and her husband Waldemar, Helen Kalcanides, Steven Kalcanides, Zoe Manocchio and her husband Todd, John Kalcanides Jr., and Chrissy Kalcanides. 

Sophie is predeceased by her brother Savvas Tsikentzoglou. She is survived by her brothers Avraam Tikentzoglou, and Prodromos Tsikentzoglou and their families; her sister: Irene Kansizoglou and her family; Her grandchildren: Despina, Christos, Michael John, Stefanie Ann, Alexis Rose; her great grandchildren: Eleni Anna, Stefanos, Giannis, and Antonios; as well as many relatives here and in Greece.

A visitation for Sophie will be held on Wednesday, April 27th, from 2:00PM to 6:00PM with a Trisagion service at 4:00PM. A funeral will be held on Thursday, April 28th 11:00 arrival at the funeral home, and 12:00 PM at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Jersey City. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery, Lyndhurst. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 524 Summit Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07306.
