Daria Krawczeniuk Obituary

Daria Krawczeniuk (née Fedkiw) died peacefully in her sleep on July 19, following a long battle with cancer. She was 86 years old. Daria was a resident of Jersey City for 57 years and spent the last seven months living in the care of her daughter in Verona, NJ.

Daria was born June 18, 1932 in Drohobych in Western Ukraine, to Antin and Evfrozyna Fedkiw, where she began and ended her formative education. She had two sisters, Jaroslava (1928-2017) and Oksana, and a brother, Ihor. In 1944, together with tens of thousands of other western Ukrainians fleeing occupying German and advancing Red Army forces, and fearful of reprisals for wartime collaboration, Daria’s family ended up in one many displaced persons refugee camps in Regensburg, Germany. In 1950, she immigrated to The United States with her family, settling in New York City. There, Daria participated in an active Ukrainian cultural and social life, and, as a young teenager went to work to help sustain her family.

In New York, Daria reunited with her future husband, Stepan (1921-2014), whom she would marry in 1954. Their first daughter, Marta lived less than a year (1956-57). Soon after, a second daughter, Motria and son, Adrian followed. The young family subsequently moved to Jersey City, NJ, where they continued a fruitful life within the local and Ukrainian communities.

For 40 years, Daria devoted her working life in the service of others as a certified nurse’s assistant, first at the Lutheran Home, then at St. Joseph’s Home, both in Jersey City. She was a devout religious believer and practitioner, a loving wife of 60 years, caring mother, grandmother, and neighbor. She was an avid gardener and took pride in cultivating flowers.

Daria is survived by her sister, Oksana with husband (Bohdan Cichocki), her brother Ihor Fedkiw with wife (Maria), her daughter Motria with husband (Andrew Horodysky), her son Adrian with wife (Cindy Chase), and granddaughters (Laryssa and Zoriana).
