With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our beloved Angel. He was called to God on October 19th with his beloved wife by his side.
Born on August 2nd, 1947, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, his humble beginnings shaped a man of great character, passionate about his morals and always striving to do things the right way. Despite making Jersey City, NJ his home, his love and affinity for his homeland never wavered. He hardly traveled anywhere else, mostly choosing to spend his free time back home, in his town, surrounded by his people.
He made his way stateside at the age of 20, full of hope and ambition, in search of his American dream. He understood how fortunate he was and proudly undertook the responsibility of looking after those back home.
A man of great faith, he found the utmost joy when his nuclear family began to form. As strong and direct as he may have been, he found equal parts of sweetness and kindness in his beautiful wife, Mercy. In the toughest parts of his illness, there was one person he always called out for, and only one thing he wanted: Mercy and her kisses.
Before Syara, Amari, Azul, Rosie, and Peaches, we were his most prized possessions. Stern when he had to be, he adored the three of us like crazy. Always willing to listen and never short of advice, he was the proudest dad in the room. He taught us about hard work by example, never letting us forget that he was dubbed ‘Number 1’ by his coworkers for how good he was at his trade. He’d then show us the cuts, burns, and bruises on his body, asking us to study and go to school so that we wouldn’t have to come home in the same condition.
He taught us empathy, how respect is the foundation of all relationships, and how most of the time, a difficult situation is best handled with a laugh.
Angel will be remembered as a gentle giant, stoic when necessary, and never shying away when called upon. He was there for everyone and anyone, glad to help as much as he could and beyond.
The list of those left to cherish his memory is long and far-reaching. He has left a lasting impression on so many lucky enough to call him papi, marido, abuelo, tío, primo, amigo.
