Anthony “Tony” Gomez, a lifelong resident of Jersey City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
Born in Jersey City on March 18 ,1951 son of the late Richard and Marie (Texeira) Gomez, Tony lived independently from age 16. He worked as a machinist for many years and retired from the General Pencil Company of Jersey City. Tony also worked with various scout troops in Jersey City for the past 50 years, especially Troop 400, 466, and 474. An avid outdoorsman, Tony loved hunting and fishing. He belonged to several archery groups and worked at both the defunct Summit Archery and at the current Jersey City Archery. Tony felt most at home in the outdoors, on Scouting trips, hunting on various state game lands, and fishing in North Hudson Park, the Secaucus Duck Pond, and Jersey City Reservoir #3 adjacent to Pershing Field.
Tony was most proud of the accomplishments of his surrogate family, the Samra Family, formerly of Jersey City, now mainly in Maryland and South Carolina. In addition to helping Michael Samra, Jr. become an Eagle Scout, Tony assisted at least 65 other boys in reaching Scouting’s ultimate honor.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial for Tony on Friday, February 6, 2026 at 6:30 PM at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 155 North Street, Jersey City, NJ 07307. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BSA Troop 466 of Jersey City.
