Anthony "Tony Cass" Carbone Obituary

Anthony “Tony Cass” Carbone, a lifelong resident of Jersey City, passed away on April 27, 2026.

Born in Jersey City on June 30, 1954, Anthony was the beloved son of the late Casper Carbone, a Detective with the Jersey City Police Department, and the late Esther De Vino, a devoted teacher for the Jersey City Public Schools and Our Lady of Mercy School.

Known to many as “Tony Cass,” Anthony’s lifelong passion was boxing. He trained at the legendary Bufano’s Gym in Jersey City, where he was coached by Dominick Bufano himself and Al Santora. As a teenager, Tony entered the New Jersey Golden Gloves boxing competition, beginning a path in the sport that remained an important part of his life.

A seasoned amateur, semi professional, and professional boxer, Tony was also a former Jersey City State College football player. As an amateur boxer, he held a record of 26 wins, 2 losses, and 0 draws. He later fought professionally as a light heavyweight from Jersey City, competing from 1981 to 1984 and finishing with a professional record of 3 wins, 1 loss, and 0 draws, including 2 knockouts in 4 professional bouts.

Tony remained involved in sports long after his own time in the ring. He was a track coach at Lincoln Park in Jersey City and a boxing trainer at the gym in Roosevelt Stadium. He helped organize local boxing exhibitions through his involvement with the Hudson County Athletic League and served as a ring announcer at amateur fights. He enjoyed working with young athletes and took pride in passing along his knowledge of the sport. He was also proud to call boxing legends Chuck Wepner and Al Certo his friends.

In addition to boxing, Anthony was a retired licensed funeral director and former investigator with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.  He also worked at Casino in the Park in Jersey City and Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands.

Anthony is survived by his loving sister, Joanne Carbone.

Tony made friends all throughout Jersey City because of his kind disposition, big heart, and great sense of humor. He will be remembered as a proud American and Jersey City resident whose life reflected strength, generosity, and a deep commitment to the young athletes and children of his community.
