Derek Emmanuel George was born on December 18, 1968 in New York City to Erwin and Sara George and died at the age of 52 on September 2, 2021 in Jersey City. He graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary in New York City and served in the Navy for 5 years where he began his career as an electrician by maintaining the ship’s boiler system. Despite the demanding work and long hours, Derek managed an active social life through membership with the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. He honed his skills working in construction and the Circle Line before spending the next 20 years with New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). Derek was an avid reader, technology enthusiast, lover of music and movies especially anime and
science fiction. He loved to travel and was ever ready to learn something new and share his experiences. He was a great listener and advisor. Derek was a patient teacher and always willing to help others. His quick whit and sense of humor touched many. Strong relationships with family and friends were dear to Derek however his bond with his son Jayden was most important to him.
Derek is survived by his caring mother, Sara George; his late father Erwin Emmanuel George; his beloved son Jayden George; cherished sister, Vanessa George; his devoted lifelong partner, Annette Garcia; and by many loving family members and friends.
Visitation is Saturday, September 11, 2021, from 4:00PM to 8:00 PM at Riotto Funeral Home & Cremation Company, 3205 Kennedy Blvd. Jersey City, N.J. 07306 (For GPS navigation, it is best to use our parking lot address: 14 Stagg Street). Private cremation will follow.
