Obituary

Dina (Gikas) Toussas, 77, of Lakewood, NJ entered into eternal rest on July 27, 2023. She was born in Epidavros, Greece to Ioannis and Iaonna Gikas. She immigrated to Jersey City, NJ on the Anna Maria in 1968 with her siblings. There she met and married her husband, Michael, and they ran a lunch truck in Kearny and eventually opened Jim’s Luncheonette in Jersey City. She later become a stay-at-home mom to raise her three children and was an active member of the Greek community at St. Demetrios Orthodox Church. She returned to work for the Board of Education at P.S. #27 until she retired and moved to Ocean County in 2013.

Her biggest joy in life was her family, especially her five grandchildren. She loved keeping up with all the activities they were involved in and met so many more people that way. She was affectionately called “Yiayia” by all who met her and loved her. She is known for her amazing baklava and other Greek specialties that she loved to make for those who enjoyed. She loved gardening and had an amazing green thumb. She will be remembered for her sassy spirit, boundless energy, smile and infectious laughter.

Dina was predeceased by her siblings Stella, George, Nick and Maria. She is survived by her husband, Michael, her son David and wife Dawn, son John and daughter Matina and her husband Joe and sister Sofia and in-laws Ageliki, Zefe, Dora, Kosta and Mira. Also surviving are her grandchildren Calista, Dorothy, Anthony, Michael and Michaela, many beloved nieces and nephews and honorary grandchildren, the Michkos and Becks.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home (For GPS, please use our parking lot address: 14 Stagg Street, Jersey City, NJ 07306). A Trisagion will take place during the visitation hours at 3:00 PM. Funeral Services are Monday, July 31, 2023, 10:00 AM at St. Demetrios Church, 524 Summit Ave., Jersey City. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, N. Arlington. 

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in memory of Dina to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Jersey City.
