Dolores Behlos (nee) Silvestry, (87) of Jersey City, NJ died peacefully at home on November 2, 2020, surrounded by her loving daughters, grandchildren, and devoted husband, Nickolaos.
Dolores was born in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico on March 17, 1933 and was the youngest of 8 children. She came to make her life in the Bronx as a young woman and soon after she moved to Jersey City and married the love of her life, Nickolaos, a Greek immigrant. Together, they owned and operated Nick's Restaurant on Communipaw Avenue. Eventually, she attended Drake’s Secretarial College and began a second career, working as a clerk and court translator in the Special Civil Division of the Jersey City Court System. She did this while raising her three daughters. Mary Kitsos, Anna Walz and Konstantina Hernandez. She is adored by her three sons in law; Mike, John and Daniel. But most of all, she leaves her legacy of love and light with her five grandchildren; Nicholas, Pete, Elena, Sofia and Lucas.
Dolores was a treasure to anyone who knew her because she was filled with love, light and joy and freely shared that with those who came in contact with her. Her deep love for her husband and family brought her to Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church where she participated actively in the choir, the Parent Teacher Organization, the Philoptochos Society, the Daughters of Penelope, and most impressively, where she attended afternoon Greek school classes with her daughters to become proficient in the Greek language. She was able to speak, read, and write Greek, Spanish and English, and as a result, in her job at the County Administration Building, the judges and lawyers always requested Mrs. Behlos to serve as translator in their courtrooms. Not only was Dolores intelligent and knowledgeable, she was compassionate and felt empathy for everyone she translated for.
Dolores was a vibrant woman, generous of spirit and full of color and passion. In her life, she made sure everyone she knew felt welcomed, loved and taken care of. She was selfless and generous of spirit. Her love of life and family was ever present. She loved to cook, dance and sing, and wherever she went, the party followed. She and her husband, who celebrated 53 years of marriage this year, exemplify the meaning of true love, loyalty, and passion. Her legacy will carry on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews around the world.
Due to Covid and for everyone's safety, the Behlos family requests that all services at the funeral home, Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church and Bay View Cemetery are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations for Dolores may be made to Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church, 661 Montgomery St., Jersey City, NJ 07306.
