(LIVE STREAM LINK IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OBITURARY PAGE)

Carmen Zayas, born on April 24, 1935, to Georgina Vega and Juan Cruz in San Juan, Puerto Rico, peacefully passed away on July 9, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Known affectionately as Emma, she was the second eldest of four siblings—Longina (Gini), Julio Luis, and Luz Delia.

In 1964, Emma met the love of her life, Nephtali Zayas, and within six months, they were married. Emma cherished Nephtali every day of her life, speaking of him with enduring love until her final breath. Together, they were blessed with two sons, Suriel Nephtali and Jephte Abinadab.

Emma's childhood dream of becoming an educator blossomed into a lifelong passion. From an early age, she demonstrated her calling by arranging her dolls as students in a makeshift classroom. After her family relocated to the United States in the mid-1950s, Emma pursued higher education and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Saint Peter's College in Jersey City. Her thirst for knowledge led her to earn numerous Master's Degrees and culminated in a Doctorate in Education. Emma dedicated over five decades to a distinguished career in education, concluding approximately seven years ago as a supervising professor at New Jersey City University, where she mentored countless new teachers.

Emma's life was marked by her deep faith and love for others. She was known for her unwavering belief in the power of prayer, offering comfort and support to anyone in need, regardless of their circumstances. Her kindness and genuine affection endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Emma leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and dedication to education. She will be dearly missed by her sons, grandchildren—Samantha, Ethan, Jeremee, Angelica, and Arturo—and great-grandchildren—Xavier and Ysabella—whom she loved and spoiled with affection.

In honoring Emma's memory, her family invites all who knew her to join in celebrating her remarkable life. Emma's spirit lives on in the lives she touched and the lessons she imparted. May she rest in eternal peace.
