James Artis Obituary

James (Jimmy) A. Artis, 97, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 13, 2025, in East Stroudsburg, PA. James was born on November 5, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY; he was the beloved son of Eva and James Artis.

James spent his childhood in Jersey City, and was educated through the Jersey City School System. He was later drafted into the United States Army. Upon returning he met and married the love of his life Mary Kirkland and settled in Union, NJ where he built a life filled with hard work and dedication. To their union were two sons, Keith and Kyle who were his pride and joy. James and Mary were married for 60 years until her transition of life.  After her passing James alternated between Massachusetts and Pennsylvania before he settled in East Stroudsburg, PA.

James spent his early career working in the insurance business where he won many accolades and vacations for his many accomplishments. He later worked for the New Jersey Highway Authority where he retired. In retirement, he & Mary relocated to Toms River, NJ, where they spent their time traveling, relaxing at the beach and with family.  They often took day trips with their grandchildren visiting historical sites, amusement parks and visiting out of town family.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, James carried a strong sense of duty and discipline throughout his life. He was a man of many talents and interests—whether he loved gardening, working on his cars, building/repairing household items, or simply tinkering around his home, he took great pride in his work. He was also an avid sports fan and had a deep love for music.

James will be remembered for his outgoing, caring, and friendly nature. He thrived on being around people, always sharing a smile and warm conversation with those he met.

He is survived by his loving son, Kyle Artis, and daughter-in-law, Kim Artis, as well as his cherished daughter-in-law, Gloria Artis. He was a devoted grandfather to Justan, Milan, Brielle, London, Kyla, Kiara, and Keirston Artis.

He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Mary Artis; his son, Keith Artis; and his brother, Lowell Artis, who preceded him in passing.

A service to honor and celebrate James' life will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025 from 10-12:30 PM at Riotto Funeral & Cremation Company, 3205 John F. Kennedy Blvd. Jersey City, NJ 07306.
