There are some people whose presence fills a room before they ever speak. Jana Mercurio Norman was one of them. Loving, kind, and warm beyond measure, she moved through the world with a gentle grace that made everyone around her feel seen and cared for. And if you were lucky enough to sit at her table when she made her famous pot roast, you knew her love was not just something she showed, it was something she nourished people with.
Jana had a lifelong love affair with stories. She devoured biographies and historical documentaries, especially anything rooted in British history, and she loved nothing more than discussing the world and its past with the people around her. She was an avid reader whose home was never without a stack of well worn books waiting to be explored. She cherished old black and white films, and the classics that shaped generations. She sketched, she painted, and she walked through museums with the curiosity of someone who never stopped learning or looking deeper.
Her professional life reflected that same mix of intellect and compassion. Jana began her career as a nurse at Englewood Hospital and Holy Name Hospital, caring for others with the quiet confidence of someone born to comfort. She later pursued masters work in psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson, driven by a desire to understand the human experience even more deeply. Her career evolved with remarkable breadth, from conducting market research for pharmaceutical and consumer products, to serving as a medical legal consultant for a law firm. Whatever chapter she stepped into, she brought empathy, insight, sharp intellect, and unwavering integrity.
Animals were drawn to Jana just as people were. Throughout her life, she lived alongside beloved cats who seemed to understand they had found a gentle soul. In her later years, she opened her heart to rescue dogs Suzy, and then Roxy, who became her companions, her comfort, and her joy.
Jana is preceded in death by her father, Gerard Mercurio, and her mother, Amelia Mercurio. She leaves behind her cherished daughter, Jana Paradiso, her son in law, Sasha Nakra, and her treasured granddaughters, Jayashree and Simran, who brought joy to her later years and who adored her endlessly. Her family carries forward the lessons she wove quietly into their lives, kindness, curiosity, strength, gentleness, and the courage to feel deeply.
In keeping with her wishes, services for Jana were private.
Jana’s life aligned beautifully with a verse she loved. The following is a quote by Julie Evans, a passage that captures Jana’s spirit with striking clarity:
WITH ALL YOUR HEART say out loud
i want to live a happy life
listen to what you just said
take notice of things
surround yourself with people you love
listen to the wind
imagine
let everything change all the time
let go of the why
welcome miracles
thank god constantly
breathe
tell the truth about how you feel
make choices
want what you want
let the animals reach you
have children teach you
take good care of your body
love passionately
share your dreams
spread your gifts
check it out
forgive the past
dive in
eat it up
take chances
be real
These words read like a map of how Jana lived her life, and how she hoped others would live theirs.
Her legacy is a quiet, powerful reminder to be gentle, but brave, to learn without stopping, to love without hesitation, and to savor the simple, miraculous beauty of being alive.
May her memory be a blessing and a light.
