Joao De Deus “Djone” Almeida 89, of Jersey City, NJ; formerly of Brava, Cabo Verde Islands entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. Joao arrived to the United States back in the early 1960’s. He settled in Jersey City, NJ, where he quickly adapted to the American way of life and became an exceptional painter for the City of New York. In his leisure time Joao was also a gifted, self-taught musician. He played the guitar, violin and the ukulele. He first picked an instrument back at the tender age of 9 and continued playing for many years. He also did carpentry work in his spare time, which he has been doing since the age of 15. He also liked to visit his casinos where he displayed his skills at the table playing poker. Joao was a very driven individual and put his family always first. So, after years of painting and was presented with a tremendous opportunity embark out at sea. He became employed at Exxon Mobil Company. He worked on the oil tankers, where he quickly displayed his fine work ethic and being a quick study, he became a chef. He started back in the mid 1970’s and worked continuously until his early retirement in 1987 due some health concerns. Joao didn’t let that slow him down. He made it an opportunity to be the best husband, father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather to his family.
Joao is survived by his devoted wife, Maria L. Almeida, his loving children, the late Eugenia Almeida, Daniel Almeida, Isaura Almeida, and Step-daughter, Ana G. Baptista. His Grandchildren, Angelica Pena and John J. Baptista, Jr. Great-Grandson, Xavier J. Baptista. In addition, 8 brothers & sisters, the late Napoleon Rodrigues, Celeste Rodrigues, Adelina Rodrigues, the late Jose Rodrigues, Adelina(Vinda) Pires, Antonio(Nony) Rodrigues, Beatrice Santiago and Angelina Fortes. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Joao is Monday, February 8, 2021 from 8:00am – 10:45am at Riotto Funeral Home & Cremation Company, 3205 John F. Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, NJ 07306. (For GPS purposes it is best to use parking lot entrance address: 14 Stagg Street) A Religious Service will also be offered here at the funeral home. Entombment will follow immediately at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington, NJ.
