John Brunn Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and boundless love that we announce the passing of John Brunn, who left this world peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, in Jersey City, New Jersey, at the age of 84.

John was born and raised in Hoboken, where his values of humility, service, and devotion were shaped. He later made Jersey City his permanent home, where he lived a life of unwavering dedication to his family, community, and country.

He was the treasured son of the late Helmar Brunn and Viola Hawkes Brunn, and the beloved husband of the late Mary Reilly Brunn, with whom he shared a life full of love, partnership, and purpose.

John leaves behind his loving children Robert Brunn and his wife Mohini, and Adriane Torres and her husband Steven. He was the adoring grandfather of Isabella, Sophia, and Olivia, who brought immense pride and joy into his life. John is also survived by his dear siblings Helmar Ronald Brunn, Robert Brunn and his wife Joy, and Helen Albanese and her husband Jack, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. Among those who will miss him most is Nina Sanchez, who was like a daughter to him and held a unique and special place in his heart.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, John exemplified integrity and service throughout his life. His heart belonged to the youth of his community, and for over fifty years, he served as a cornerstone of the Washington Park Little League, where he mentored generations of young athletes and instilled in them the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect. To the kids that he coached, as well as any kids he knew and loved, he was affectionately known as Coach or Grandpa. In recognition of his extraordinary commitment, the Hudson County Board recently dedicated the league’s scoreboard in his honor, a lasting tribute to a man whose impact will continue to resonate for years to come.

John was a proud and active member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, and the Elks Club, always lending his time and presence to causes greater than himself.

While his greatest passion was his family, John also had a fondness for science fiction novels, a genre that sparked his imagination and curiosity. He was an avid billiards and darts player, participating in local leagues during the 1980s and creating lifelong friendships through his easygoing nature and quiet charm.

John will be remembered as a man of gentle spirit and immense heart. He was kind, selfless, humble, and compassionate, always placing the needs of others before his own. He never complained, never judged, and never withheld his support or care. To know John was to be seen, valued, and loved unconditionally.
