John "Jack" Hallanan Jr. Obituary

John Joseph “Jack” Hallanan Jr. of Jersey City passed away on June 17, 2024 due to complications from a stroke. He was 85.

Jack was born on October 26, 1938 to John Joseph Sr. and Agnes Cecilia Hallanan (née Muldoon) in the Bronx. Shortly after he was born, the family moved back to Jersey City and Jack attended Saint Aedan’s Elementary School and Saint Aloysius High School. After he graduated from high school in 1956, Jack joined the “Fighting 69th” a unit of the New York Army National Guard which can trace its lineage back to the Revolution. Jack served in the Guard for 28 years, retiring with the rank of Sergeant in 1984.

While serving in the Guard, Jack earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Rutgers University and simultaneously began a career in a field then still in its infancy: IT. He took a job at Prudential Insurance before accepting a position at Chase-Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase) then at Paine Webber (now UBS). He retired in 2008.

In 1976, Jack married the love of his life, Kathleen Pearl. They had one son: John Joseph III.

After retiring, Jack became deeply involved in a number of civic organizations: the Lincoln Association of Jersey City, the Lincoln Highway Association, the Saint Aloysius High School Alumni Association, the West Side Community Alliance, the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians-Mychal Judge Chapter, the American Legion and the Veterans Corp of the Fighting 69th among others. He gave generously of his time and was known for his warmth and good humor. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Jack is predeceased by his father, John Sr., his mother, Agnes and his wife Kathleen. He is survived by his son John Joseph III, his daughter in law, Elizabeth Hallanan (née Cervenak) his granddaughter Maeve Kathleen and numerous cousins, in-laws and loved ones.
