Johnny Leung Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Johnny Leung, beloved father, brother, uncle, friend, and founder of the renowned Komegashi Japanese Restaurants. Johnny, age 60, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, in New Jersey, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on December 8, 1964, in Hong Kong to Leung Ko and Lai Yung, Johnny was the second youngest of eight children. Growing up in Kowloon, Johnny developed a lifelong love for both family and food, influences that would shape the rest of his life. At the age of 15, Johnny moved to the United States to continue his education, later attending Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. There, he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering before deciding to remain in America, where he would build a life that would touch the hearts of many.

In 1989, Johnny and Cathy opened Komegashi Japanese Restaurant in downtown Jersey City. This marked the beginning of what would become a culinary staple in the community—a place known for its welcoming atmosphere and comforting meals. His love for good food and the people he served fueled his entrepreneurial spirit, and in 2000, Johnny, along with Carole, opened Komegashi Too in the rapidly developing Newport area on the waterfront. Both locations became cherished destinations for a cozy meal, a celebratory night out, or a place to enjoy refreshing drinks.

A true self-starter, Johnny was always keen to learn and explore new interests. He was self-taught in wine tasting and developed a passion for whiskey and Scotch, often engaging in lively discussions about distillation methods and the distinctiveness of different brands. Johnny also had a deep love for the water, whether it was tending to his beloved fish tanks, fishing locally or off the deep-sea coast, or sharing stories about his snorkeling adventures. His children, Christina and Benjamin, were often the audience for his endless enthusiasm about the various species of fish that captured his imagination.

Johnny’s personality was one of warmth, generosity, and joy. He was a man who brought laughter and smiles wherever he went. As a loving father to Christina and Benjamin, and a devoted brother and uncle to his extended family, Johnny’s love and kindness knew no bounds. His spirit will live on through the countless memories he created, the meals he shared, and the lives he touched.

Johnny is survived by Carole; his children, Christina and Benjamin; his three sisters, three brothers, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Kenneth.

Johnny’s legacy will continue to thrive in the hearts of all who knew him, especially within the warm embrace of Komegashi. His generosity, hospitality, and infectious zest for life will be deeply missed by family, friends, and the community that he loved so dearly.
