Jorge Aviles Obituary

Jorge O. Aviles, a lifelong resident of Jersey City, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026 after a life defined by intelligence, compassion, and a deep commitment to helping others. Born on February 22, 1953 in Jersey City, Jorge was the son of the late, Rafael Aviles and Amelia Veguilla. He grew up on Magnolia Avenue in Jersey City, where he spent most of his life and remained deeply connected to the community he loved.

Jorge was a proud graduate of St. Peter's Preparatory School, Saint Peter's University, and Rutgers Law School in Camden. Determined to achieve his goals, he worked throughout college to save money to help pay for law school. After earning his law degree, he began his career as an attorney in Atlantic City, before returning to Jersey City where he built a distinguished legal career spanning more than 40 years. Known for his sharp mind and strong sense of justice, Jorge became a well respected attorney who dedicated himself to advocating for others, particularly tenants and individuals in need. His dedication to public service extended beyond the courtroom. Jorge was appointed Councilman under Mayor Anthony Cucci, and he proudly served as a Board Member of the Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery, an institution he cared deeply about.

Those who knew Jorge will remember him as an intelligent, caring, and genuinely funny man who could always make people laugh, even during the most difficult times. After the heartbreaking loss of his son, Jorge channeled his grief into helping others and living life to the fullest, always striving to make a positive difference in the lives of those around him. Outside of his work, Jorge enjoyed exploring new places. Saturdays were often spent traveling to Saratoga Springs, Vermont, New Hampshire, and various state parks. He also loved visiting the Caribbean, especially Puerto Rico and St. John, where he enjoyed spending time in Cruz Bay and at the Soggy Dollar.

Jorge is survived by his loving daughter, Barbara Vilchez-Aviles; his caring sister, Hilda Aviles; and his brothers, Rafael Aviles and his wife Daisy Barreto, and Robert Aviles. He is also remembered by many extended family members, friends, colleagues, and clients whose lives he touched throughout the years. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Michael Aviles.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Richard Naawu, an extraordinary caregiver whose compassion and dedication made it possible for Jorge to remain at home at the end of his life. Richard stayed by Jorge’s side until the very end and embodied everything one hopes for in a caregiver. The family also wishes to thank the staff of Peace Care at St. Ann’s and St. Joseph’s Homes for their kind and loving care, as well as the many family members and friends who visited Jorge while he was in the nursing homes and offered comfort and support.

Jorge believed deeply in living life fully and often reminded those around him: “Forget about having stuff, have experiences.”
