Joseph M. Sousa

Joseph M. Sousa, age 67, of Jersey City, New Jersey, passed away on August 16th, 2024.

He was surrounded by his loving wife, Linda, his 3 cherished daughters, Christa Adelaide, Vania Lucinda, and Lauren Josephine. His adoring mother, Adelaide Rodrigues Galvao e Sousa, his brother, Anthony Paulo Sousa, and his Son in Law, Phillip Longo, were also present. He is also survived by Anthony's wife, Liete Sousa and their children Alyssa and Miranda. Joseph is predeceased by his father Manuel da Costa e Sousa. 

Born in Gondoriz, Arcos de Valdevez, in the Minho region of Portugal, Joseph moved with his family to Canada at age 2, and by age 10, his family moved to and settled in Manhattan. Joseph met his wife, Linda, at the Portuguese-American Progressive Club in SoHo. They were married at St Anthony's Church in 1984, and were committed to growing their family. They were blessed with their daughters, twins Christa and Vania, and their youngest, Lauren.

Joseph worked in New York City both as an Assistant Superintendent, and subsequently as a Building Engineer in the Lincoln Center area. One of Joseph's main attributes included being everyone's trusted handyman.

Joseph was very proud of his Portuguese heritage and immersed his family in the culture and traditions which greatly delighted him. He learned from his mother to be an excellent cook; always developing the flavors of traditional Portuguese cuisine, which included grilling sardines, his famous shrimp dishes, and baking all sorts of treats for those he loved. 

Joseph remembered details and listened to his friends and family with the intent to provide – it was common to find him at your doorstep unprompted, with a bag of groceries or his tools, willing to help in his selfless way.

Joseph enjoyed travelling with his family, caring for his beloved pets, Moose, the family dog, and Seaweed, his 15 year old turtle. He occupied himself tending to his houseplants, and continued learning about his varied interests. Joseph was a wealth of knowledge on any topic imaginable. We will all miss a man who cared deeply for the people in his life.

Visitation is scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 22, 2024 from 4pm - 8pm at Riotto Funeral Home & Cremation

Funeral mass will be on Friday, August 23, 2024 at 10:30am at Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church, located at 400 Willow Ave, Hoboken, NJ 07030.

Entombment will follow at Saint Stephen's Cemetery & The Chapel at Short Hills, 451 Millburn Ave, Millburn, NJ 07041.
