Josephine Santomauro (née Altera), passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on November 11, 1937 in the town of Santomenna, in the Province of Salerno, Italy, to the late Rose and Franco Altera.
Josephine immigrated to the United States in 1958, beginning a new chapter of her life built on hard work, dedication, and deep devotion to family. She was a caring and loving woman who dedicated herself to helping others and always placed the needs of her family first. Known for her strong work ethic and generous heart, Josephine leaves behind a legacy of kindness, perseverance, and love.
She was the beloved wife of the late Carmelo Santomauro. She is survived by her devoted sons, Anthony, Carmelo, and Frank Santomauro, her daughters in law, Christine and Bozena Santomauro. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Frank and Daniella. Josephine was predeceased by her brother, Salvator Altera. She is also survived by her siblings, Lecrezia Megaro, Maria Galante (Joseph), Anna Sapio (Rolando), Angela Loia (Cosmo), and John Altera (Colleen); by her sister in law, Rose; her in-laws Mario and Anna; and by many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Riotto Funeral Home & Cremation Company, located at 3205 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, Jersey City. (For GPS navigation, please use the parking lot address of 14 Stagg Street). A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 PM at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 122 Ferry Street, Jersey City. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Mausoleum, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington. Josephine will be remembered for her warmth, her selflessness, and the unwavering love she shared with her family and all who knew her.
