One hundred years ago, four year old Kathleen Castle sailed into New York Harbor holding the hand of her mother Elizabeth Canny, accompanied by her sister Rose and her Aunt Agnes. The family joined her father, Patrick Canny, in Jersey City where she resided for the rest of her life. If you had asked what she thought of Jersey City she would have told you it was the very best place to live.
Kathleen was loving, kind and generous in all things. After the early deaths of her parents she was devoted to her siblings Rose, Mary, Agnes and Patrick Canny. Kathleen was happily married to Edward Castle with whom she had three children, Edward, Colleen and Stephen. Her other children Irene and Jim married into the family. Her grandsons Brian, Timothy and Patrick enlivened some of the happiest years of her life with joy and laughter. Kathleen is at the heart of many of the family's most cherished memories. She was a beacon of love and warmth for her family, and she remains the family's moral guiding star.
Kathleen taught her family how to stand up. She was a master of getting up each day and doing what needed to be done. She chose kindness over righteousness and treated everyone with dignity. Kathleen was brave in the face of adversity, and lived her life facing the future. She leaned heavily on her faith in God.
Kathleen's spiritual home was St Anne's Roman Catholic Church where she made many friends who enriched her life throughout the years. They all loved and cared for one another through the ups and downs of their long lives. To have been part of it was a blessing, and to have observed it was a lesson in the value of friendship.
Kathleen was much loved and will always live on in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be long remembered by those of us who were touched and shaped by her.
Kathleen is survived by her son Edward and his wife Irene, her daughter Colleen and her husband James, and her son Stephen, as well as her grandsons Brian Sweeney, Timothy Sweeney, and Patrick Sweeney and his wife Odeilis Sweeney, and her great grandson James Diego Sweeney.
