Lucy Soovajian Obituary

Lucy V. Soovajian of Union City, NJ, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the age of 85.   A beloved sister, aunt, educator, musician, and friend, her life was a testament to generosity, faith, and love. A graduate of Emerson High School, Lucy earned her Master’s degree from Kean College and was incredibly devoted to her work and to making the world brighter for those around her.  She was a cornerstone of the Union City Board of Education and school system for over 50 years, rounding out her long career serving as Supervisor of Academic Programs.  She was honored for her dedication to Union City's school programs with the Innovator Award and also the Emerson High School Alumni Association “Sports Hall of Fame” with the Humanitarian / Civic Award for outstanding dedication, devotion and loyalty in 2013. Her passion for teaching and commitment to children’s education left an indelible mark on countless lives.

Lucy’s talents extended far beyond the classroom. For over 60 years, she served as the organist for the Holy Cross Armenian church, enriching services with her musical gifts and unwavering devotion to her faith. Her music brought solace and joy to all who heard it, a true reflection of her spirit.  Christmas was her favorite time of year, and she made it magical for all her nieces and nephews. Her home was always filled with love, laughter, and the scent of the family’s Armenian dishes, especially her cherished yalanchi recipe. These traditions will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to call her family and friend.

Preceded in death by her parents Rose and Nishan Soovajian, and her two sisters Mary Soovajian and Margaret Ashekian, she is survived by her brother, John Soovajian, her nieces and nephews Lucy, Mary, Talene, Gregory and John as well as numerous grand-nieces and nephews and their families.  Now reunited with her loved ones, her spirit will continue to shine brightly and her legacy of kindness, warmth, and devotion will forever inspire those she leaves behind.

May Lucy rest in eternal peace and watch over her family and friends with the same boundless love she shared in life. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
