Lydia Correa Mendoza Obituary
A native of the Philippines, Lydia came to the US in 1991. Born in the town of Taal, province of Batangas, around 60 miles south of Metro Manila, the youngest of three siblings, her parents, Mauricio Mendoza and Rafaela Correa, bought her into this world on March 21, 1941. Growing up, she helped her two older brothers, Nesting and Bening at a hardware store, owned by her parents while she's attending school and later earning a degree in Commerce education. After many years working as a bookkeeper at Philippine National Railroad, she decided to venture out on a life in the US at age 50. New Jersey welcomed her as she joined her childhood bestfriend, Lorenza Deomampo, a registered Dietician. Lydia found that odd jobs were opulent in the US as she accepted a dog-sitter job from a kind and wealthy childless couple in New York City who treated her like a family member. It took several years before the job ended when the beloved dog, Boomer, passed on and the couple relocated to Florida. A new job was at hand at a jewelry store in the City, were she worked briefly as a clerk but a car accident in 1997 in Florida caused injury to her back triggering constant back pains which made her give up the job. Driving to work in New Jersey was more convenient that she accepted a job at nearby Meadowlands Medical Center, who needed help at its gift shop and alternately, at the cafeteria as a Dietary Aide. She loved and kept the job until retirement. She spent her life of retirement in leisure, joining church activities and social activities for local tours and out of town trips with friends and extended family. Casino trips were her most favorite. Lydia loved playing the piano, doing crossword puzzles and Sudoku. Health problems suddenly struck her when she was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer in 2017. The last four years were spent battling the disease with her very positive attitude, until, sadly, on October 19, 2021, she lost the long fight. She was 80 years old.
Funeral services will be on, Saturday, October 23, 2021, 9:00 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Roman Catholic Church, 56 Elmwood Ave, Montclair, NJ 07042. Follow by a viewing, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Rosedale Crematory, 408 Orange Road, Montclair, NJ, 07042. Cremation To Follow.
