Margaret Fiore Obituary

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we announce the passing of Margaret E. Fiore, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who peacefully departed this life on January 29, 2025, in Blairstown, NJ.

Born on September 1, 1948, in Jersey City, NJ, Margaret grew up surrounded by the energy and resilience of her hometown. She carried that same spirit throughout her life—one of unwavering strength, kindness, and an unshakable belief in the goodness of others.

Margaret was a true Jersey City mom—hardworking, selfless, and endlessly devoted to her family. She faced life’s hardships with quiet courage, teaching those around her that bravery isn’t the absence of fear but the determination to move forward despite it. She raised her family in Jersey City, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and the comforting aroma of her incredible baking.

After retiring from Bloomingdale’s in Short Hills, Margaret moved to Sparta, NJ, in 2015 to be closer to her daughter and beloved grandchildren. There, she spent her days tending to her garden, basking in the sun, and filling her home with the sounds of her favorite country music.

Margaret’s love and legacy live on in her children: Maria Smagalla and her husband Todd, along with their children Franco and Reese Zapata, and Ava and Jack Smagalla; and Jason Fiore and his family. She is also survived by her brother Carl Fischer and his family.

She now joins in eternal peace her beloved husband, Joseph Fiore, her parents, Carl Fischer and Margaret Mueller, and her brother, Frank Fischer, who passed before her.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Margaret’s life on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Riotto Funeral Home (For GPS, please use 14 Stagg Street, Jersey City, NJ 07306) from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with a religious service to be held during visitation hours. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any Alzheimer’s Foundation, honoring Margaret’s compassionate heart and the love she gave so freely.

A special thank you to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice for their kindness and care in Margaret’s final days.

Margaret’s life was one of love, sacrifice, and quiet strength. Though she has left this world, her legacy will forever bloom in the gardens she planted, the songs she cherished, and the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know her.
