Maria Moccia, age 95, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in Montague, New Jersey, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on October 24, 1930, in Castelvetere sul Calore, Avellino, Italy, Maria later immigrated to the United States and made her home in Jersey City, New Jersey. There, she built a life centered on family, faith, and devotion, values she carried with her in everything she did. In her later years, Maria was lovingly cared for by her devoted daughter, Jane, whose kindness and dedication brought her great comfort.
Maria found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved. She was especially known for her cooking, which brought family together around the table and created lasting memories filled with warmth and laughter. Her presence was a source of comfort and stability, and her love was felt in both the quiet moments and joyful gatherings she shared with her family.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James Moccia, with whom she shared many years of love and companionship, as well as her dear sister, Carmela Picariello.
Maria leaves behind her cherished daughters, Phyllis and her husband Michael Tacik, Celeste and her husband John Black, Tina, and Jane and her husband Jonathan Gamutan. She was a loving grandmother to Danika and her husband Evan Goyette, Leanna, Sabrina and her husband Charles Fabel, Jonathan, Brandon, Derek, Jordan, Taylor, Devon, and Dylan, and a proud great grandmother to Carmela, Korben, and Elora.
Maria will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her unwavering love for her family, and the many lives she touched with her kindness. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know and love her.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 122 Ferry Street, Jersey City, New Jersey 07307. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, New Jersey.
