Michael J. Malloy, Jr. "Mike Laidlaw" a lifelong resident of Jersey City passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at the age of 74. Michael was the owner of Laidlaw Auto Repair in Jersey City for many years. He was also a co-owner of Romanissimo Restaurant in East Rutherford.
Michael honorably served in the U.S Army, Signal Corp. during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967 and was an M14 rifle sharpshooter. He was also a member of the Jersey City Veterans of Foreign Wars. In 1999 and 2000, Michael was New Jersey State Champion of Uechi-Ryu Karate.
Proud of his Irish heritage, Michael was selected by the Jersey City St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee as Irishman of the Year in 1999 and Irishman of the Millennium in 2000. Michael was a member of the Jersey City Elks Lodge No. 211 and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 1, Hudson County.
Michael served 10 years as commissioner of the Jersey City Parking Authority and 18 years for the Jersey City Incinerator Authority. Recognized for his service to the citizens of Jersey City, Michael was awarded a commendation from the State of New Jersey Senate and General Assembly. In 2011, the City of Jersey City dedicated the intersection of Laidlaw Avenue and Summit Avenue as Michael J. Malloy, Jr. Way.
Every year, Michael would host a party at Monmouth Park Racetrack and also would reserve the entire Bareli's Restaurant in Secaucus with his favorite oldies group the Cameos for hundreds of friends, coworkers and family. He loved being surrounded by people and enjoyed traveling to the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City and Donovan's Reef in Sea Bright. A kind and generous soul, Michael was a true gentleman that would help anyone in need and always would support his community.
Michael was the beloved husband of the late Ann Marie Malloy and Janice DeMartino; devoted stepfather of Kim, Dakota and Kiley; loving son of the late Marie E. Malloy and Michael J. Malloy, Sr., dear brother of the late Ann Bruno. Mike always referred to Harry Cruz as the son he never had. We were family and we shared a strong and loving bond, I will miss our weekend coffee and conversations: said Marisol Cruz, his daughter in law. Mike was the proud uncle of his two nephews: Eric Cruz and Ryan Cruz and his two nieces: Randee L. Evans and Linda Gonzalez who called him “Tio Mike” we will miss his humor and sarcasm. He was truly loved by all. Michael J.J. Malloy lived his impossible dream. Michael was also the loving uncle of Marie Ferenc and the late Martin Bruno. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Visitation is on Friday, November 6, 2020, 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at RIOTTO FUNERAL HOME & Cremation Company, 3205 John F. Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, NJ 07306. Funeral Mass is on Saturday, November 7, 2020, 10:30 AM at St. Nicholas Church (Corner of Ferry St. & Central Ave.), Jersey City. Interment will follow with military honors at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.
