Porferia Vegas, lovingly known as "Rupi," was born on September 19, 1945 in Samar, Philippines, to Benito Barredo and Consolacion Zamora. She is survived by her two children, Caroline Vegas and Armando Barredo; four grandchildren, Kristan Aponte, Marcus Vegas, Nielsen Barredo, and Joshua Barredo; and her two siblings, Esther Villanueva and Miguel Barredo. Rupi was predeceased by her beloved husband, Louis Vegas, who passed away back on March 7th, 2020.
Rupi was raised in Manila, Philippines, and came to New York City at the age of 36, where she built a life filled with love, family, and simple joys.
Rupi was the heart of her family, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She also formed cherished friendships with many neighbors, coworkers, teachers, parents, and students during her 24 years as a dedicated school crossing guard.
She found joy in the little things: watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and the Filipino Channel; solving word searches, crossword puzzles, and Sudoku; praying the rosary each night with unwavering faith; and spending time with her beloved dog, Max, who brought her so much comfort and companionship.
Rupi was warm, kind, and pure, a radiant light in the lives of all who knew her. Her love was undeniable, and her absence will be deeply felt. She was truly special and will be missed beyond words.
