Randolph "Randy" Riotto Obituary

Randolph “Randy” A. Riotto passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Bayonne Medical Center with his loving family at his side.  He was born in the Marion Section of Jersey City to the late Mary (nee Tedesco) Riotto Dolcemascolo and Mariano Riotto. He remained a lifelong resident and communicant at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

A graduate of Dickinson High School and an inductee in its Hall of Fame, Randy attended McAllister School of Embalming and Funeral Directing in New York City.  He was licensed as a funeral director in New York and New Jersey in 1950 and was an active licensee for over 70 years.

Along with his mother in 1958, he co-founded the Riotto Funeral Home. He welcomed his sons Randolph M. and Richard J. into the family business and remained a presence in the operation of the funeral home which is still family owned and operated.

Randy’s dedication to the community, compassion for families, and delicate and often humorous style made him an icon in funeral service and a model for current and all aspiring funeral directors. A phenomenal storyteller, he was an encyclopedia of neighborhood knowledge. His ability to connect with families across generations and amongst different backgrounds was one-of-a-kind. He considered it an honor to serve his community and families during their most difficult times with compassion and kindness.

Randy was a member of the Hudson County Funeral Directors’ Association and served as President in 1965 and was also a member of the New Jersey State Funeral Directors’ Association,

Randy was incredibly devoted to the Jersey City community.  In 1961, he served as chairman of the Jersey City Sewerage Authority.  A lifelong member of Unico of Jersey City, he served as President of the Chapter in 1966. He was also a member of the Jersey City Rotary Club, the University Club and the Knights of Columbus.

A longtime member of the Dante Alighieri Society, he was selected as the 1991 Man of the Year by the Hudson County Columbus Day Parade Committee.  Randy was the Voice of Columbus for two years and in 2001 he was the Grand Marshall for the Columbus Day Parade. He was also honored as the Centurion Man of Year on the 100th anniversary of the Dante Alighieri Society.  He continued to serve as an honorary trustee and was a regular attendee at the Monday night fellowship.

An avid golfer, Randy was a longtime member of Forest Hill Field Club.  He was also a member of the Tiro A. Segno Rifle Club of New York.

Randy proudly served the nation as a medic in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 419 and the 2022 Hudson County “Veteran of the Year.”

On October 2, 2023, Randy's enduring legacy was honored by Hudson County, with the dedication of the corner of Stagg St. and Kennedy Blvd. in Jersey City as Randy Riotto Way.

Randy was predeceased by his beloved wife, Olga (nee Switlyk), his sister, Marianne Dorfman and her husband Sid and his nephew Joseph Dorfman.  He is survived by his loving children, Randolph M. Riotto and his wife, Toni Dara Infante, Lorraine Riotto, M.D., and Richard J. Riotto; his cherished grandchildren, Giancarlo Riotto, M.D. and Sabrina Riotto; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. To those who knew him best, his zest for life was contagious and matched by his intellect and curiosity about the world around him.
