Roopandar "Kayso" Kowlesar
January 8, 1945 – February 15, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Roopandar "Kayso" Kowlesar, who departed this life on February 15, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on January 8, 1945, in Grove Village, East Bank Demerara, Guyana, Kayso was one of sixteen children of the late Lutch and Lilly Kaulesar.
Kayso is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce, and his loving family, including his siblings Suggie, Leila, Bharrat, Bach, Balkarran "B," Deodat, Chintaman, Indra, Shantie, and Chanmonie. He was a proud father to Chris, Pamie, Julie, Alvin, and Sunil, and a cherished father-in-law to Christine, Rudy, and Andre.
His legacy lives on through his grandchildren—Ashley, Brittney, Emily, Christy, Michelle, Kevin, Stephanie, Devin, Sadira, and Jasmine—as well as his great-grandchildren—Joel, Jace, Justin, Dahlila, Nalani, Ausar, Rāsasta Hetep, Zyaire, Melanie, and Kaylee.
He is reunited in peace with his late parents Lutch and Lilly and late siblings, Shiela, Mohan, Johnny, Jeff, and Benny Sr.
Kayso was a man of quiet strength and gentle wisdom, yet his presence was always felt through his kindness and unmistakable charm. He had a signature way of dancing, a unique rhythm that stood out to all who knew him. His love for his Kangol hats became part of his signature style, a constant companion throughout his life.
A gifted gardener, he had a magic touch with plants, growing fruits and vegetables that he generously shared with family and friends. His home was surrounded by flowers that thrived under his care, never seeming to wilt. His love for animals was just as profound—his birds, especially his African Grey parrot, Ferbie, brought joy to his home, filling the air with song and lively chatter. Ferbie mimicks Kayso so well that it will feel like a piece of him will always live on through his feathered friend.
Kayso also appreciated movement and wellness, dedicating time to exercise and taking care of himself. He found comfort and peace relaxing in his backyard hammock with his feet up or immersing himself in two of his favorite pastimes— watching cricket and western movies. In his earlier years, he found joy in riding the horse carts in Guyana, which sparked his deep love for horses and farm life. No matter where he was, animals held a special place in his heart. From riding the horse carts to riding his bike throughout Jersey City, Kayso was a man on the move. Visiting friends, doctors, and stores, he and his bike were inseparable.
At home, the warm and familiar melodies of classic Indian music played on the radio, setting the tone for every visit and welcoming family and friends into a space filled with love, tradition, and Kayso’s unmistakable presence.
He lived a life of quiet joys and great love, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and unwavering devotion to those he cherished. His spirit will live on in the hearts of his loved ones, and his memory will be forever treasured.
A service to honor his life will be held Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Riotto Funeral Home 3205 Kennedy Blvd Jersey City, NJ 07306 for his viewing.
