Salvatore “Sal” Russo, 92, of Ocean Grove, formerly of Jersey City, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2020. Salvatore was born on April 19, 1928 in the town of Riesi, Sicily, Italy to his late parents, Vincenzo and Teresa (nee Siciliano) Russo. Sal was the third child of eight. Later, he moved to Genoa, Italy where he worked as a tailor. He later moved to Canada and then immigrated to the U.S. in 1971 settling in Jersey City, where his two brothers also lived. Sal attained a position at Harvey Bernard Fashions of NYC, where he was involved in the production and distribution of Men’s fashions, and later became a Manufacturing Exec. for Liz Claiborne Fashions, NYC. He was then promoted and traveled to South America where he oversaw the manufacturing and productions of several fashion lines produced in the Dominican Republic for the American Market . He finally retired in 1993 and residing at Allegria Home of Ocean Grove for the last 2 years, where he enjoyed the fresh sea air and new friends. Sal was an active member of a Local Italian American Club in Bayonne, a ravenous Soccer fan, enjoyed reading the Italian Newspapers and Italian TV, and playing poker with his friends, brothers, and nephews.
He is survived by his younger brother, Ettore of Norristown, Pennsylvania; his sister, Elsa of Torino, Italy; and his cousin, Joseph Siciliano of Piscataway, NJ; and by his many nephews, nieces, and their children. Sal will be remembered by his family and friends for his constant smile, poker skills, and love of constant improvements with his family’s clothes.
Visitation is Monday, September 21, 2020 at 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Riotto Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Jersey City. (For GPS Navigation, it is best to use our parking lot address: 14 Stagg Street). Prayer service will begin at 2:30 PM. Private cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Salvatore's honor to the American Heart and Lung Association.
