William "Bill" Syby, 74, a lifelong resident of Jersey City, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022.
Bill was a retired tower operator for PATH. Recognized for decisive actions on September 11, 2001, Bill was credited for returning trains packed with commuters heading to the World Trade Center that were unaware of the destruction above.
A proud U.S. Army Veteran, Bill served during the Vietnam War. He was a devout parishioner of SS Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Jersey City. Bill was an avid sports fan and loved the NY Giants, NY Rangers and the NJ Devils. His love for his family and friends will be greatly missed.
Bill was the beloved husband of the late Anastasia "Stasie" (nee Gitel-Tizio); devoted father of Tamara Anastasia Syby-Holovko and her husband Andriy Holovko. Also survived by loving nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Visitation is on Sunday, May 1, 2022, 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM (Parastas Service 5:00 PM) at RIOTTO FUNERAL HOME & Cremation Company, 3205 John F. Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, NJ 07306. Funeral will begin on Monday, May 2, 2022, 9:30 AM at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 AM at SS Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Jersey City. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will be collected by the family to support Ukraine.
